MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After a 30 minute rain delay in the top of the second inning, Barry cruised to a 14-6 victory over St. Thomas Tuesday night at Feinbloom field.
On a rainy night at Feinbloom field, the Buccaneers (23-14) scored 14 runs on 16 hits as all nine starters recorded at least one hit.
Barry got things started in the second with a pair of runs on Luis Rios-Reyes’ sacrifice fly that scored Ramon Valdez. Later in the inning Tyler Kellmann, who doubled earlier in the frame, scored the Bucs’ second run on a wild pitch to grab a 2-0 lead.
Carlos Matamoros led off the third with a double and advanced to third on a deep fly ball to right field. With one out, Sheehan Planas-Arteaga drove in Matamoros with a grounder to the right side to increase the lead to 3-0.
Nate Greve started for the Bucs and tossed three scoreless innings and finished with four K’s, but did not figure into the decision.
St. Thomas (27-15) answered with a three-run rally in the top of the fourth to tie the game, capped by Michael Centeno’s two-RBI single.
However, on this night the Buccaneers offense proved to be too potent for the Bobcats pitchers’ to handle. Barry posted two runs in three consecutive innings from the 5th-7th and then exploded for five runs in the eighth to put the game completely out of reach.
In the eighth the Buccaneers send ten men to the plate and belted six hits, including two homers in route to the five run frame. Plans-Arteaga drove a ball over the right-center wall, a two-run shot, for his fifth home run of the season. Two batters later, Kellmann got in on the action with a two-run blast of his own, his second homer of the season, both of which have come against the Bobcats.
Joeanthony Rivera (3-0) earned the win for the Bucs with two scoreless innings in relief as Barry used six pitchers in all.
Cardenas paced the offense with a 4-for-5, 3 RBI night and Valdez, Kellmann and Rios-Reyes each drove in a pair of runs for the Bucs.
