Barry University men’s golfer Adam Svensson was invited to compete in the World Amateur Team Championships in Karuizawa, Japan Sept. 10-13.
Svensson, who will represent Canada, is returning to Barry for his junior season. After his second season with the two-time national champion Buccaneers, he was named the Jack Nicklaus NCAA Division II National Golfer of the Year. He competed in the PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open on an amateur's exemption for a second straight year in July.
The World Amateur Team Championships is a biennial international amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zones, Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.
A women’s tournament will also be held Sept. 3-6. Competition will be held at the Iriyama Course and Oshitate Course located on the 108-hole, six-course Karuizawa 72 Golf Complex.
Each team has two or three players who compete in an 18-hole format. The two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day, 72-hole total makes up the team’s score.
WATC’s first event was held at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland in Oct. 1958.
