Baseball Lends Hands To Haiti

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- At Barry University, one of the main tenants of the school’s mission is service within the local community and to communities around the world. On October 11th, Barry’s Baseball team fulfilled that function as they volunteered for the 2014 Hand in Hand for Haiti 5K at Zoo Miami.

Hand in Hand for Haiti is a collective response to Haiti’s humanitarian crisis that occurred following the catastrophic earthquake that hit the Caribbean nation on January 12, 2010.

The project set out to build a sustainable school complex for the neediest children of the city of Saint Marc. After generating extraordinary support from the travel retail industry, the world-class educational facility, Lycée Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable, opened its doors on October 3, 2011.

Barry’s baseball players and coaches were at this year’s event and helped set the event up, passed out water and collected donations for Hand in Hand for Haiti.

While primarily a charity event and a chance to serve the community, it was also a bonding experience for the team, which is bringing in several players who are new to the squad and to the University. As the Bucs go into the 2015 season, days like this will help form the foundation of their success.
