DENVER, Colo.—The Barry University men’s soccer team overcame some sloppy play to defeat the Regis Rangers 2-1 in double overtime at Ranger Field on Thursday.
The Rangers (0-1-0) struck first in the third minute when Aaron Mejia crossed a ball in from the right wing to Chris Camp who beat Buccaneer keeper Devala Gorrick to the near post.
After the first 20 minutes, the Bucs (1-0-0) settled down and began to apply pressure to the Rangers. Lee Yakubowich won a ball in the midfield and passed it up to Henry Apaloo who raced past the defenders and then beat Ranger keeper Trevor Steege to the ball. He touched it past Steege and scored into the open net in the 31st minute to knot the game at 1-1.
The score stood until the second overtime period. Emmanuel Miranda passed a ball up the right side and Rolando Vazquez ran on to it. Steege hesitated in coming out and arrived late, fouling Vazquez hard in the penalty box. Steege received a red card and Apaloo calmly converted the penalty kick against backup keeper Eric Lamar.
Gorrick made six saves in goal for the Bucs and Tommy Nodland added a back save off a corner. Steege had four saves for Regis.
The Bucs take on NCAA Division II runner up Fort Lewis on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
