ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Barry University volleyball team (1-1) split a pair of matches to open the 2007 season at the Concordia Invitational. The Buccaneers opened with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-28) win over the Millersville Marauders, but fell to the #2 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 3-1 (30-19, 30-22, 30-32, 30-21) in the nightcap.
 
The Buccaneers started the season with a 3-0 victory over Millersville (0-1). In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Barry racked up 56 kills and a .289 team attack percentage to the Marauders’ 28 kills and a .120 team percentage. The Bucs hit a blistering .367 percentage in game two, but recorded a match-high 23 kills in game three.
 
Newcomer Camilla Pagnan paced the Buccaneers with 17 kills, hitting .256 with three service aces and nine digs. Spenser Rigg added 14 kills and a blistering .349 hitting percentage, while freshman Stefanie Sveiven made her collegiate debut with 10 kills playing in only two of the three games. Lauren Evans recorded 18 digs in the match, 10 of which came in game one. Emily Bires led the Marauders with nine kills.
 
Against the highly touted Bulldogs (2-0), Barry started out flat dropping the first two games 30-19 and 30-22. However, after a few adjustments at the intermission, the Bucs came out strong and took game three 32-30. The score was tied 19 times and the lead exchanged hands eight times before Barry finally came out on top. The Bulldogs regrouped for the final game to win 30-21.
 
Barry’s Pagnan led again with 15 kills, followed by Rigg’s 13 kills. Evans recorded 23 digs, while Maria Romanowski dished out 38 assists.
 
Minnesota-Duluth’s Vicky Braegelmann recorded a match-high 24 kills and a .333 hitting percentage to lead the Bulldogs. She was followed by Kari Wolford with 16 kills and Danielle Beckstrand. Setter Katie Gangelhoff recorded a double-double with 60 assists and 13 digs.
 
Pagnan finished the day with 32 kills and 14 digs, while Rigg added 27 kills and 20 digs. Evans finished with 41 digs averaging 5.86 per game.
 
The Buccaneers will conclude tournament play on Saturday, Aug. 25 with two matches. They will face the seventh-ranked Concordia-St. Paul Bears at 1 pm followed by a 5 pm match with Northern Michigan.
