Volleyball Tops Chargers to Open Tourney

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Camilla Pagnan (Jr., Morro da Fumaca, Brazil) recorded 19 kills to lead the Barry University volleyball team (3-2) to a 3-0 win over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers to open play at the Rollins Volleyball Invitational on Friday night. The game scores were 30-23, 30-26, 32-30.
 
Barry opened the match hitting .303 with 14 kills to win the first game 30-23. As the game wore on, UAH presented more of a challenge for the Bucs, but they managed to take a two-game advantage after winning game two 30-26.
 
In the final game, Barry was at match point 29-28, but the Chargers managed to rip off the next two points for a 30-29 advantage. After a timeout by head coach Dave Nichols, the Buccaneers reeled off the next three points for the win, 32-30. Freshman Stefanie Sveiven and sophomore Spenser Rigg ripped off consecutive kills, while Rigg and Samara Ferreira combined for the block to end the match.
 
Pagnan hit a .298 percentage in the match and recorded a match-high 19 kills to pace Barry. Rigg hit a blistering .360 added 11 kills and seven digs. Lauren Evans collected 13 digs and Maria Romanowski recorded her second-straight double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Sveiven added five blocks.
 
Kelly Ingram led the Chargers with 11 kills, while Ann Ledford led all hitters with a blazing .462 hitting percentage. Yuki Kurihara handed out 14 assists, while Whitney Corder paced all defenders with 16 digs.
 
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 1 for their final two matches at the Rollins Volleyball Invitational. The Buccaneers will face St. Mary’s (Texas) at 10 am followed by a 6 pm match against Michigan Tech.
