MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University women’s soccer team (3-2-0) were defeated by the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers on Friday evening in the first round of the Nike Classic at Buccaneer Field.

The Bucs the first period with sufficient defense to hold off the Toppers. But the second period proved to be a true turn-around as St. Edward’s took control.

Kim Abbott scored the first goal for St. Edward’s off an assist from Kristen Gascoyne’s outside pass which allowed Abbott to break away. Gascoyne turned around and scored twenty minute later off of a corner kick from teammate Mallory Roberts. The final goal for St. Edward’s dribbled in the right side of the goal after just nicking the post off a shot made by Abbott.

Sophomore Steph Day led the Bucs with four shots, two on goal; Junior Damarys Mendez had three shots with one on goal.

Troi Jorgensen (2-2) picked up her second win in goal and the Bucs’ Sami Cromartie took a second loss.

The Bucs will return for the final round of the Nike Classic on Sunday Sept. 9 at 12:30 p.m. against the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions.
