Volleyball Falls to Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball team (6-9, 0-2 SSC) dropped their second straight Sunshine State Conference match, this time 3-0 to the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center. The game scores were 33-31, 30-19, and 30-23.

The Buccaneers continued to struggle at home against the Sharks after Friday’s loss to Lynn. Barry held a 25-20 lead in the first game until Nova’s Paola Ruiz served six straight points to give the Sharks a 27-25 advantage and the eventual game one win, 33-31. NSU continued to use a well-balanced offensive attack throughout the match to down the Bucs at home.

Nova Southeastern’s key to the win was their 18.5 team blocks to Barry’s five. Coming into Saturday’s match, Barry held a 22-0 series lead. The loss was the first to NSU.

The only player to reach double-digit kills was Barry’s Camilla Pagnan. She finished with a match-high 19 kills, while Lauren Evans recorded 22 digs.

Emily Carle and Ruiz led the Sharks with nine kills apiece, while Carle hit a blistering .474 clip. Valia Petrova recorded the only double-double with 30 assists and 12 digs.

The Buccaneers will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at NCAA Division I Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers at 7 pm.
