Men's Golf Finished Third at Coker Invite

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Barry University men’s golf team finished right where they left off on day one of the Coker Invitational finished third out of a 20-team field. The Buccaneers fired a two-round score of 573 (283-290) on the 6,849 yard, par 72 Panther Lake Golf Course.
 
No. 12 St. Edward’s finished 14-under-par with a two-round score of 562 (280-282) to finish as the tournament team winners. Second-ranked Florida Southern (281-286=567) finished five strokes back in second, while #1 Barry (283-290=573) finished in the third spot. No. 10 Nova Southeastern (288-286=574) finished fourth, while Rollins (294-282=576) and Columbus State (283-293=576) finished tied for fifth.
 
Victor Billskoog held on as the Buccaneer team leader and finished fifth out of 105 individuals to start the season. The sophomore anchored the Buc lineup at the Coker Invite and finished six-under-par with a two-round score of 138 (68-70). Carlos Velez (69-74=143) finished tied for 18th and Chris Carlin carded a second-round two-under par 70 to finish T28 with a two-round score of 145 (75-70). Preston Roberts (72-76=148) and Sebastian Pinzon (74-84=158) finished T52 and T100 respectively.
 
Chris Wolfe of Armstrong Atlantic and Matt Smith of St. Edward’s each fired two round totals of 134 (-10) to finish as the tournament individual medalists.
 
The Buccaneers will be back in action at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational on Oct. 1-2 hosted at Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Ga.
 
First Round
 
ORLANDO, Fla. – The top-ranked Barry University men’s golf team began defending their 2007 NCAA Division II title on Monday as they kicked off their 2007-08 season at the Coker College Invitational. After the first round of play, the Buccaneers are tied for third with an opening round score of 283 on the 6,849 yard, par 72 Panther Lake Golf Course.
 
After a year hiatus, Victor Billskoog returned to the Buccaneer lineup in dominating fashion. After the first round of play, the 2006 Sunshine State Conference Freshman-of-the-Year fired a four-under-par score of 68 and is currently tied for second out of 105 individuals.
 
With a year of championship experience under his belt, last year’s top newcomer Carlos Velez finished one-stroke back of Billskoog with a three-under-par 69 and tied for sixth. Preston Roberts finished tied for 26th with an even par 72, while newcomers Sebastian Pinzon (74) and Chris Carlin (75) finished T49 and T64 respectively.
 
No. 12 St. Edward’s finished eight-under with an opening round score of 280 and are the current tournament team leaders, while SSC member and second-ranked Florida Southern is one stroke back with an opening round 281 score. No. 1 Barry (283) and third-ranked Columbus State (283) both finished five-under-par in the opening round, while eight-ranked Georgia College finished opening day in fifth place with a one-under-par score of 287.
 
St. Edward’s Matt Smith is the tournament individual leader after firing a tournament low eight-under-par 66.
 
The Coker Invitational will conclude it’s final round on Tuesday, Sept 25 with the first teams teeing off at 7:30 am on holes one and ten of the Panther Lake Course.
