Volleyball Drops SSC Match to Tritons

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball team (8-12, 2-4 SSC) dropped their second straight Sunshine State Conference volleyball match, this time 3-0 to the Eckerd Tritons on Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Center. The Buccaneers fell by game scores 31-29, 30-26 and 30-25.
 
In the first game, Barry jumped out to an early 8-5 lead. But the Tritons (14-5, 4-3 SSC) fought back and traded points with the Bucs until gaining a 19-16 advantage. Both teams continued trading points until then end when Eckerd managed to come out on top 31-29. Barry’s Camilla Pagnan and Stefanie Sveiven led all attackers with five kills apiece in the first set.
 
After a 30-26 loss in the second game, the Buccaneers took the court after an extended break and took their biggest lead in the match 16-10 in game three. But after two Buccaneer miscues, a kill from Eckerd’s Angela White, back-to-back blocks and a Kristy Busse service ace, the Tritons tied the match at 16 all. The momentum carried the Tritons the rest of the way for a 30-25 win in the final set.
 
Pagnan led Barry’s offensive attack with 17 kills, while Sveiven added 12 kills. Maria Romanowksi dished out 41 assists and Lauren Evans added 13 digs to her growing resume.
 
Eckerd’s well balanced attack was led by Keisha Carter’s 14 kills and blistering .545 clip. Lydee Benoit followed with 13 kills and added 17 digs for the double-double, while Shannon Ruby added 41 assists. Busse collected a match-high 19 digs.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action against the Saint Leo Lions on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 pm.
