LAKELAND, Fla. – Headers were the name of the game today in Lakeland. The Barry University women’s soccer team (5-6-0, 1-3-0 SSC) fell to the Florida Southern Moccasins (10-4-0, 4-1-0 SSC) 3-1 at Barnett Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs started off the first period with a goal fifteen minutes into the game. The Mocs fouled the Bucs about 30 yards outside the box. Junior Elanna Brady took the free kick towards the back post to awaiting freshmen Emily Bourgoine for the header into the goal.
The Mocs retaliated with only five minute remaining in the first period with a similar situation which advanced the Bucs. Lady Moc Amy Holsenbeck took a free kick into the box where teammate Erin Hopkins headed the ball into the back of the goal to tie the game 1-1 to end the period.
Florida Southern opened up the second period with another header for goal off a corner kick from Lady Moc Linda Hoglund to put Barry behind 2-1 only 15 minutes into the second period. The Mocs’ lead corner-kicker, Hoglund, served the assist into Christina Crooks for her first goal of the season to put the Mocs ahead 3-1 with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Florida Southern’s Sarah Furr (10-4-0) earned her 10th win and Buccaneer Kelly Tryson (3-3-0) picked up her third loss on the season.
The Buccaneers will next face Lynn University on October 9 in Boca Raton, Fla. at 4:00 pm.
