BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped a 2-1 decision to arch-rival Lynn at the McCusker Sports Complex on Wednesday.
The Bucs (5-7-1, 0-4-1 SSC) played one of the better games of the season, but two crucial defensive miscues cost a pair of goals.
In the 12th minute, James Hayers played a long ball up the center of the field. Buccaneer keeper Devala Gorrick hesitated at the top of the box and Dwight Barnett headed it past him and raced around to score in the empty net and give the 11th-ranked Knights (12-1-0, 4-1-0 SSC) a 1-0 lead.
The score held through the half. But early in the second period, the Bucs workedthe ball down the field with some crisp passing. Diego Lucio passed over to Vuk Kojic whose shot was saved briefly by Knight keeper Tim Melia. But Kojic corralled the carom and evened the match.
The Bucs dodged one bullet in the 71st minute. In a play eerily similar to the first goal, a long pass found Barnett alone at the top of the penalty box when Gorrick was unable to come out fast enough. But Barnett shanked the shot to the right of the empty net.
Finally in the 75th minute, Jack Williams played another long ball up the middle from the back and Barnett outraced the Barry defense to ball and beat Gorrick one on one for the game winner.
The game was physical with the teams combining for 42 fouls and four yellow cards with Lyn holding the edge in both 23-19 and 3-1.
Melia made three saves to pick up his 11th win against no losses, while Gorrick had eight saves but dropped to 4-7-1 on the season.
The Bucs host the Florida Tech Panthers on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Buccaneer Field in their next outing.
