ORLANDO, Fla. – The Barry University men’s basketball team (0-1) opened up their 2007-08 season at Disney’s Division II Tip-Off Classic. The Buccaneers dropped their first match to the Stone Hill Skyhawks 74-54 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports on Friday afternoon.

Barry led out to an impressive start in the first five minutes of the game led by Chad Bishop and Gabe Lazo. Bishop and Lazo hit back-to-back three-pointers in the second minute of the game. Stonehill’s Matt Hall counter-attacked with a three, but Lazo answered back with one more to put the Bucs up 11-5 through the 14th minute.

Stonehill tied it up just minutes later with two consecutive three-pointers from Nick Smith, and one more additional field goal put Stonehill up 13-11 at the 12:30 mark. The Skyhawks continued to increase their lead over the Bucs in the first half. Bishop and Karega Tucker were the only Buccaneers to score in the final half of the first period, combining for only nine points.

Entering the second half, the Bucs trailed the Skyhawks, 30-20. Shots were traded back and forth between the two teams through the first minutes of the half, yet Barry seemed to be picking up the pace once again as a steal from Buccaneer Chris Uz allowed Tucker to take off down the court for a slam dunk. But it was the three-pointer immediately following from Bishop that put the Bucs within two of the Skyhawks, 38-36 with 14 minutes remaining in the game.  Barry also put the pressure on the Skyhawks early in the second period as they forced four fouls in the 14th minute alone.

Newcomer Chad Warren made his first appearance in the game with :07 seconds left in the game and hit a long three-pointer with :03 seconds remaining to close out the game, 74-54.

Despite the great efforts on behalf of the Buccaneers’ newbies, there are still lessons to be learned on the court. Stonehill was able to accumulate an incredible 24 points solely off Buccaneer turnovers, while the Bucs were only to capitalize on 10 points.

Bishop returned to his hometown to lead the Buccaneers in scoring with 16 points while Tucker tallied 11. Newcomer Willie Whitfield collected four rebounds, while Uz added four assists.

The Buccaneers remain in the tournament to face the Columbus State Cougars on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2:30 pm. On Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 pm, Barry will face the Grand Valley State University Lakers whom most recently defeated #8 Michigan State in double over-time.
