DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers got the 2007-08 women’s basketball season off to a fast start with a 72-57 win over the host Nova Southeastern Sharks in the opening round of the NSU/Marriott Tip-Off Classic at NSU's University Center Arena on Friday night.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 12-3 lead, thanks to some outside sharp shooting by Lucy Martinez and Princess Bailey.

But the Sharks chipped away at the lead and knotted the game at 21-21 with 3:21 to play on a pair of free throws by Ashley Wilson. The Bucs carried a 23-22 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Bucs (1-0) stormed out of the locker room, building a quick six-point lead behind the shooting of Lisa Fors, whose three-pointer with 17:53 put the Bucs up 32-26.

The Sharks (0-1) battled back to knot the game at 32-32 and 34-34, but Barry responded with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to go up 46-34 and NSU could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Bailey led all scorers with 21 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Bucs, while Fors added 15 points and Christina Thompson had 10.

Amber Bishko led the Sharks with 17 points while Ashley Wilson added 13. LaShawnna Edwards led NSU with six rebounds.

For the game, Barry shot 46.3 percent from the field, including 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from three-point range, while holding NSU to 36.1 percent. In addition, the Buccaneers out-rebounded the Sharks 35-22.

The Bucs will face the Midwestern State Mustangs at 2:00 pm on Saturday in the final round of the tournament.
