MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Amanda Mageean’s 12 points and 11 rebounds led the Barry Buccaneers over the 17th-ranked Florida Tech Panthers in a battle of undefeated Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball teams in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday.

The win was the Bucs’ seventh straight to start the season, breaking the mark for the best start in school history set in 2000-01 when they advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.

The Buccaneers (7-0, 1-0 SSC) ran off 11 straight points in the second half to turn a six-point lead into a 47-30 advantage at the 10:36 mark on a short jumper by Ratisha Rumph.

The Panthers (4-1, 0-1 SSC) could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way and the Bucs extended the lead to as many as 26. Grace Paul’s driving basket and subsequent free throw put Barry up 60-34 at the 2:21 mark.

The Bucs shot a robust 58.3 percent from the field in the second half after connecting at a 34.4 percent clip in the first half. They also stepped up the defensive pressure, holding the Panthers to just 16.0 percent (4-for-25) in the second half.

In addition to Mageean, Princess Bailey added 11 points and six boards for the Buccaneers. No Panthers scored in double figures, but Lynisha Nelson and Casselle Russell each scored eight points.

The Bucs host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Monday, Dec. 3 before taking off 15 days for exams.
