HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—Chris Uz drained a pair of free throws with 0:17 seconds left to lead the Barry Buccaneers over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers 63-60 at Spaggins Hall Saturday night.

The Bucs (4-5) overcame a 20-point deficit to win an important regional game on the road. Karega Tucker and Willie Whitfield combined for 24 second half points to fuel the comeback.

The Chargers (3-4) roared to a 27-7 lead in the first period on a fastbreak layup from Tyler Dunaway. The Chargers hit 7-of-15 shots from behind the arc in the first period and carried a 37-23 lead into the break.

In the second half, head coach Cesar Odio inserted Whitfield into the starting lineup and the 6-5 freshman immediately made his presence felt, keying an 11-2 run in the first four minutes with seven points. From there, Tucker took over scoring 16 of his game-high 21 points in the period.

Chad Bishop’s three-pointer with 10:38 remaining gave the Bucs a 47-46 lead, their first of the game.  The Bucs grabbed their biggest lead, 58-47 at the 7:06 mark when Tucker capped an 11-2 run with a three-pointer.

The Chargers mounted a comeback of their own, trimming the lead to 61-60 at the 2:17 on a reverse layup by Srdan Boskovic.  But neither team could hit another shot from the field and Uz’s free throw salted the game away.

The Bucs take the next 12 days off for final exams and come back to the court Dec. 20-21 at the Pepsi/DoubleTree Suites Invitational at Lynn University taking on Missouri-Rolla and New Haven.  Both days games start at 5:00 pm.
