BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball team (5-6, 0-0 SSC) suffered a disappointing loss to the University of New Haven Chargers (5-5) on Friday evening, 53-49, at the Pepsi/Double Tree Suites Guest Suites Holiday Classic hosted by Lynn University.

At the six minute mark in the second period, the Bucs trailed by four, 46-42. Jamaal Madyun’s three-pointer cut the lead to one with 5:10 on the clock. Within less than a minute, Barry’s Karega Tucker broke out of the pack with a jumper to put the Bucs up by one, 47-46.

The two teams proceeded to exchange the lead twice, including a slam dunk from freshman Willie Whitfield to advance the Bucs, 49-48, with 3:35 on the clock.

An unfortunate foul on Barry’s Tucker sent New Haven’s Tetrick Stonar to the line to shoot one-and-one. Two good free throws put the Chargers up by one, 50-49, at the two minute mark.

With 16 seconds remaining, Barry had what they thought would be the last possession, but a failed layup attempt from Tucker to win the game turned into a foul on Barry’s Chad Bishop and Stonar was sent to the line again. Making one of two attempts, the Bucs were still only a three-point shot away from overtime with three seconds left on the clock. However, Bishop picked up his fifth foul of the game with one second remaining off of Stonar who once again returned to the line and sank both free throws to make the final score 53-49.

The Bucs sent the Chargers into the locker rooms at the half trailing by one. The Bucs shot almost 42% from the field in the first half with the help of Tucker’s eight points and Whitfield’s six rebounds in the first alone.

Whitfield led the Bucs with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Tucker and Chris Uz combined for 21.

Barry will break for the holiday season and return to action at Nova Southeastern University’s Holiday Classic, December 28-29 where they will face Olivet Nazarene and Molloy, both games at 6:00 p.m.
