MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women’s basketball clamped down the Shaw Lady Bears to earn a 54-41 win in the first round of the Barry Holiday Classic in the Health & Sports Center on Friday night.
The Bucs led 34-32 at the 12:28 mark, but rolled to an 11-3 run over the next eight minutes to take a 45-35 lead at the 4:33 mark on a baseline jumper by Lisa Fors. The Bucs extended the lead to as many at 14 points, before settling for the 13-point win.
The Bucs held the Lady Bears to just 18.5 percent shooting, including just two of 23 from three-point range.
Princess Bailey led the Bucs with 12 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. She added five assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Amanda Mageean added nine points Lucy Martinez chipped in eight. Alisha Sanford came off the bench for nine rebounds as the Bucs held a 51-40 edge on the boards.
Jamie Goshen led the Lady Bears with 17 points, while Tanisha McGaughey added nine.
The Bucs take on Bentley in the second round of the Classic on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
