DAVIE, Fla. – The Barry University men’s basketball team (5-7) dropped their first game of the NSU Holiday Classic to the Olivet Nazarene Tigers 66-60 on Saturday night at the University Center.
Despite being down 45-26 with 16:05 remaining in the game, the Buccaneers managed to overcome the huge deficit and pulled to within one 57-56 on a Karega Tucker layup at the 2:44 mark. Barry outscored ONU 37-30 in the second half, but the late comeback was staged off by the Tigers.
The Bucs shot 54.5 percent from the field in the second half to ignite the second-half surge, while holding the Tigers to 10-for-28 (35.7 percent).
Three Buccaneers scored double figures led by Tucker’s 13. Martin Leibovich came off the bench to add 11, while Willie Whitfield added 10. Tucker also collected a team-best eight rebounds.
Phil French hit 9-of-10 from the field and scored 19 with 10 rebounds to pace the Tigers. Tyler Wallenfang followed with 18 points, while Ryan Paxon finished with 15.
With the score tied 10-10 and 13:05 left to play in the first half, the Tigers went on an 8-0 run for an 18-10 lead and outscored the Bucs 26-13 the remainder of the half for a 36-23 lead at the break.
The Buccaneers will conclude play at the NSU Holiday Classic with a 6 pm match-up against Molloy on Saturday, Dec. 29.
