MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University men’s basketball team (6-13, 0-7 SSC) dropped their second straight Sunshine State Conference match-up by six points or less, this time falling 78-72 to the Saint Leo Lions (8-9, 2-5 SSC) at the Health & Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the Bucs shooting 52.7 percent (29 of 55) from the field, Saint Leo hit 11 three pointers and were 19 of 24 from the free throw line to edge Barry at home.
Chad Bishop matched his career-high 20 points to lead the Buccaneers. Karega Tucker followed with 18 points, while Willie Whitfield came off the bench to score 12. Jeff Willis led the Bucs on the boards with eight rebounds.
Saint Leo’s Jordan Prais hit eight of nine from the field and was six-for-six at the free throw line for a game-high 22 points, while collecting eight rebounds. Dusty Driggs added 15 points, while Thomas Kaiser followed with 11.
Barry jumped out to an early 10-6 lead early in the first half, but the Lions went on a 17-4 run to claim a 23-14 lead with 10:33 remaining. Barry managed to reclaim the lead 35-34 on a layup by Karega Tucker at the 1:15 mark, but Saint Leo’s Jordan hit the final shot of the half to give the Lions a 36-35 lead at the intermission and led the rest of the game.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 facing the Nova Southeastern Sharks at 7:30 pm in conference action.
