PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the 2008 baseball season with a 19-2 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Friday night at Palm Beach Gardens High School field.

The Bucs exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning as Andrew Frezza and Carlos Gomez both belted homers in the frame.

The Bucs got on the board in the second inning, without the benefit of a hit, as Yudelmis Hernandez reached on an error and Mitch Rodriguez was hit by Sailfish starter Owen Grau (0-1). Both runners scored on wild pitches.

Fielding miscues cost the Sailfish in the fifth and eighth innings. Nick Shaw had an RBI double and Joel Keefe drove in a run with an infield hit. Two more runs crossed the plate on errors. In the eighth, Frezza delivered a two-run double after PBA leftfielder Mark Jarvis dropped a fly ball. Frezza came in on a wild pitch.

Ray Rhoads (1-0) earned the win for the Bucs with five solid innings. He allowed five hits and walked four, giving up two runs, and struck out two. Grau was tagged with the loss for PBA. He went 3.2 innings, allowed five runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks, and struck out two. Bobby Riley went the last four innings without allowing a run to pick up his first save.

Frezza went four-for-five with four runs and five RBI. Gomez added three hits and three RBI and every starter scored at least one run. Billy Falconio and Nick Norley each had two hits for the Sailfish.

Barry set a school record for the most runs scored in a season opener, breaking the mark of 17 set in a 17-0 win over Dana in 1987. They also tied the mark for margin of victory.

The teams conclude a three-game series on Saturday with a double header starting at 4:00 pm.
