LA JOLLA, Cal. –With the game stalled for darkness tied at 11-11 on Friday night, the Barry University baseball team (5-3) lost a close contest 11-12 in 11 innings on Saturday morning against the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Tritons at Triton Baseball Field.
With two men at second and third in the bottom of the eleventh, the Tritons’ (8-2) Matt Cantele singled to right field to score the winning run 12-11. Barry’s Robbie Conver (1-1) suffered the loss while UCSD’s Guido Knudson (2-1) claimed the victory.
The game was notched at five apiece going into the ninth inning when both teams scored six runs in their respective half innings. The Bucs’ Andrew Frezza led off the inning with a solo home run, and then with the bases loaded Mitch Rodriguez belted a two-RBI single to put Barry up 8-5. After a Brett Rossi single and a Triton error, two more Buccaneers crossed the plate to score. Chris Leon finished off the half inning by singling to center field scoring Rossi and giving the Bucs an 11-5 advantage.
With darkness approaching, UCSD answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth. Tim Mort’s RBI single capped off a six run, five-hit performance by different Triton players. The inning ended with the game notched at 11 each and the threat of nightfall imminent.
Barry’s bats proved hot all game. In the first inning the Buccaneers scored four runs off three hits. After Nick Shaw singled to right center, Leon hit a massive home run to left center that put the Bucs up 2-0. Later that inning, Carlos Gomez doubled to right center scoring Frezza and Joel Keefe to extend the lead 4-0. The tritons, though, battled back and scored two runs in the first to cut the lead 4-2.
Servidio led the Bucs with four hits while Shaw, Rossi, and Rodriguez each added three. For the Tritons, four players each contributed three hits.
Barry continues their four-game series with the Tritons with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11:00 am.
