MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University women’s basketball team (16-8, 7-6 SSC) dropped a Sunshine State Conference match-up to the Tampa Spartans (18-5, 10-3 SSC) in double overtime 82-77 during homecoming at the Health & Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

The stingiest defense in the SSC, Barry held true to tradition holding the Tampa Spartans to a mere 13 points in the first half of play and carried a 33-13 lead into the locker room at the half. But the Spartans exploded for 45 points in the second period to send the game into overtime and eventually won by five in the second overtime period.

At the 10:54 mark in the first period, Barry held a 10-9 lead, but then went on a 23-4 scoring run to close out the half to take a commanding lead. Tampa shot just 14.3 percent (3-for-21) from the field in the period to Barry’s 46.2 percent (12-for-26). The Bucs also beat the Spartans on the boards 19-14.

However, in the second half, the Spartans shot a blistering 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the second period that to Tampa outscoring the Bucs 45-25 to pit the game into a deadlock at 58-58. Barry led the entire second period, but Tampa opened with a 15-2 scoring run to narrow the gap to 35-26 with 12:56 to play in regulation. The Spartans continued to nip at the Bucs’ heels until Alexa Kane nailed a lay-up at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Both teams went basket-for-basket in the first overtime scoring 12 points apiece and went into a second overtime period tied 70-70. The Spartans finally managed to outscore the relentless Bucs 12-7 in the final decisive period for the 82-77 win.

Princess Bailey led the Bucs with 16 points and nabbed four steals to pace the Bucs, while Lucy Martinez followed with 14 points. Kia Palmer scored 11, while Alisha Sanford came off the bench for 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Sheena Walton hit the double-double scoring a game-high 23 points and reeled in 12 boards. DeShaydia Mackey followed with 22 points and six assists, while Erica Woodard followed with 17 points before fouling out.

The Buccaneers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 23 to take on the Saint Leo Lions on the road.
