MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women’s tennis team rolled over the Florida Tech Panthers 6-0 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Monday.
Though the Bucs (7-1, 4-0 SSC) swept the doubles, it was not without a bit of drama. Olivia Lilien and Saskia Kruse made short work of Sarah Collins and Annie Brethour 8-0 at number three. At number two, Angie Werschel and Helen Wisniewski handled Andrea Madrigal and Nicole David nicely 8-4.
But at the top spot, Barry’s Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens had a 5-3 lead over 25th-ranked Panther duo Michaela Horvathova and Natalia Ramos when the teams had a disagreement over the score of the game. After a lengthy discussion with the head referee, the game was replayed in its entirety and the duo from Tech came out on top. They went on to win the next three games to take a 7-5 lead before Csordas and Stevens rallied to knot the set at 7-7, then broke the Panthers (3-4, 1-2 SSC) to go up 8-7. The Bucs could not hold their serve, but prevailed 7-5 in the tie-breaker to take the point.
In singles, Csordas make quick work of Ramos 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot and Wisniewski knocked out David 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match. Werschel added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Madrigal at number four, but the final three matches were stopped by the rain with the Bucs up a set and leading in the second in all three flights.
The Bucs travel to Orlando, Fla., this weekend to face the 10th-ranked Rollins College Tars and the fifth-ranked West Florida Argonauts.
