MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The sixth-ranked Barry softball team (23-2) posted a pair of shutouts to run their winning streak to 22 games at the Barry University Invitational on Saturday at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs beat Indiana (Pa.) 2-0 and Southern Connecticut State 3-0.
In the opening game, Amber Jack (13-0) tossed her second career no-hitter past the Crimson Hawks. The Buccaneer junior faced only two over the minimum, striking out eight without a walk.
Megan Young scored both runs for the Bucs, coming home on a fielder’s choice by Jack in the second and on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Goelz in the sixth. Young had two of the Bucs’ six hits.
Jenny Shaffer (2-3) took the loss for IUP. She went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
The game was the 21st straight win for the Bucs, snapping the mark of 20 straight set in 1990.
In the second game, Young (7-2) nearly matched Jack’s feat, ending up with a one-hit shutout and striking out 11.
Brittany Anderson scored the only run Young would need in the third inning. On third base after singling to lead off the inning, she came in when Owls’ starter Kerry Iacomini (2-1) was called for an illegal pitch.
The Bucs tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Young and Holli Davis belted RBI doubles in the frame.
Shyla Rider led the Bucs at the plate with three hits, while Cristina DeTagle, Ashley Likens and Young all had two hits.
Iacomini took the loss for the Owls. She went seven innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out two. Khristie Lee broke up Young’s no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth inning with a chopper over Likens’ head at second base.
The Bucs will face the Millersville Marauders and have a re-match with the Owls on Sunday.
