MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The 14th-ranked Barry Buccaneers ripped through the ninth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks 7-2 in Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis action at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Thursday.
The Bucs (13-4, 5-2 SSC) swept the doubles. Angie Werschel and Helen Wisniewski defeated Andee Johnson and Tsippy Waterman 8-6 at the number flight and, at number one, Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens upset the ninth-ranked pair of Ulia Talalenko and Alexa Korotkevich 8-4.
At the third flight, the match was evenly contested. The Sharks’ pair of Edita Kulichova and Mary Crider jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but the Barry’s Olivia Lilien and Berit Peterson battled back to tie the match at 8-8 and force a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, the Bucs jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held on 7-5 to take the point.
Singles was nearly as one-sided. Wisniewski made short work of Johnson 6-0, 6-1 at number four and Stevens clinched the team match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Korotkevich at number two.
Number 25 Angie Werschel made it 6-0 for the Bucs with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Waterman at number three, while Lilien defeated Crider 6-1, 7-6 (5) at number six.
Faced with a shutout, the Sharks (11-5, 4-3 SSC) rallied to take the final to matches in three sets. After splitting sets at number one, #26 Talalenko defeated Csordas in a super-tiebreaker 6-3,4-6, 10-8. Kulichova came back from a 6-1 defeat in the first set to beat Peterson 6-1, 6-2 in the final two sets.
The Bucs host the Florida Southern Moccasins on Sunday, Mar. 30 at 1:00 pm.
