MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dominated the Florida Southern Moccasins 8-1 in Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis action on Sunday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center. The win clinches the third seed for the Bucs at the SSC Tournament in Tampa, Fla., Apr. 17-20.
The Bucs (14-4, 6-2 SSC) swept the doubles. At the top flight, Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens defeated Senka Softic and Erin Conroy 8-6. Number two doubles was even closer with Angie Werschel and Helen Wisnieski beating Ashley Hungerford and Karolina Stochlova 9-7. Berit Peterson and Olivia Lilien handled Nora Baertschi and Veronika Kovacikova 8-5 at number three.
Singles was largely a one-sided affair as well, with the Bucs taking five of the six flights. Peterson made short work of Mona Sendesni at number five 6-1, 6-1, while Lilien handled Kovacikova 6-0, 6-4 at number six to clinch the match.
At number three, #25 Werschel defeated Hungerford 6-4, 6-3. Stevens prevailed at number two 6-3, 7-5 over Stochlova.
The Moccasins garnered their only point at number four with Conroy defeating Wisniewski 6-2, 6-4.
Tenth-ranked Csordas out-lasted #11 Softic at the top flight in a third-set tie-breaker 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
The Bucs will travel to Texas next weekend for a trio of matches against teams from the Lone Star State.
