Women's Tennis Shutouts Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas—The tenth-ranked Barry Buccaneers (15-4) shutout the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers 9-0 in women’s tennis action at the Br. Emmett Strohmeyer Courts on Thursday.
 
Barry’s eighth-ranked duo of Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens handled the Hilltoppers’ (4-9) Giselle Lopez and Regina Del Bosque 8-3 at the top doubles flight, while at number two, Angie Werschel and Helen Wisniewski defeated Caryn McGraw and Janelle Otero 8-5.
 
The third flight was the closest match, with Olivia Lilein and Berit Peterson prevailing in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4) over Elizabeth Jacobi and Annie Ruscoe.
 
Singles was even more lopsided as the Bucs lost just 12 games. Csordas, ranked 14th in the latest ITA polls, handled Del Bosque 6-3, 6-0 at number one. At number two, 26th-ranked Stevens defeated Lopez 6-2, 6-3 in the closest singles match.
 
Number 35 Werschel shut out Jacobi 6-0, 6-0 at number three. Wisniewski made short work of Otero 6-1, 6-1 at number four.
 
Fifth and sixth singles went to the Bucs by mirror scores. Peterson defeated McGraw 6-1, 6-0 at number five, while Lilien took out Ruscoe 6-0, 6-1 at number six.
 
The Bucs continue their Texas swing with a match at Incarnate Word on Friday.
