SAN ANTONIO, Texas—The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers edged the 18th-ranked Incarnate Word Cardinals 7-2 in men’s action at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center on Friday.
The Bucs (14-3) led 2-1 after doubles. The Cardinals’ (10-5) top duo of Henry Estrella and Michael Castillo, ranked number three nationally, defeated Patrick Rittenauer and Ales Svigelj 8-5 at number one, just the second loss of the spring for the Bucs.
Barry took the bottom two flights. Emmanuel Fraitzl and Jakub Fejfar defeated Chase Holliday and Efrain Cayama 8-6 at number two, while Roman Werschel and Christoph Gayer handled Rudy Obregon and Jake McMindes 8-5 at number three.
In singles, the Bucs took the bottom two flights in straight sets, but the top four flights all went three sets. Fejfar beat Obregon 6-2, 6-4 at number five and Manuel Lauter defeated McMindes 6-2, 6-2 at number six.
At the top flight, second-ranked Estrella took down Barry’s Rittenauer after a first set stumble 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2. But, despite losing the first set at flights two to four, the Bucs won all three matches. Fraitzl defeated #43 Holliday 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at number two. At three, 20th-ranked Svigelj beat Castillo 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Werschel handled Cayama 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 at number four.
The Bucs close out their Texas trip on Saturday, Apr. 5 at the Mabry Center against Midwestern State at 10:00 am CDT.
