Men's Golf Finish 5th at NCAA Regional

Final Round
AUSTIN, Texas – The Barry University men’s golf team fell just short of defending their 2007 national title after finishing fifth out of the eight-team field at the NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional on Wednesday. The Buccaneers fired a three-round score of 869 (294-292-283) on the 6,805 yard, par-71 on the Golf Club at Circle C course.
 
Barry’s Victor Billskoog (+2) finished T9 out of 45 individuals with a score of 215 (70-76-69) after firing a final round two-under par score of 69 to pace the Buccaneers. Chris Carlin (+4) finished T15 with a three-round 217 (74-73-70) score, while Carlos Velez (+5) finished one stroke back and T23 with a three-round 218 (75-73-70),
 
Willy Pumarol (+8) and Preston Roberts (+15) rounded out the Buccaneer individuals in 32nd and 39th respectively. Pumarol shot a three-round score of 221 (75-72-74) and Roberts finished with a score of 228 (77-74-77).
 
West Florida (-12) claimed the regional championship with a score of 840 (279-279-282) and will advance to the NCAA Division II national championship along with second-place Nova Southeastern (-8) which finished just four strokes back with a score of 844 (284-280-280).
 
Florida Southern (+4) shot a three-round score of 856 (279-298-279) to finish third, while North Alabama (+6) finished fourth with an 858 (289-286-283) three-round score. Barry (+17) rounded out the top five teams.
 
West Florida’s Kyle Scott finished with a nine-under-par score of 204 (67-70-67) to earn the individual regional championship, while also leading the Argonauts to the team regional championship.
 
The tournament concludes the Buccaneers’ 2008 campaign and will wait until next season for another title run.
 
 
Second Round
AUSTIN, Texas – The Barry University men’s golf team remained tied for fifth place in the second day of competition at the NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional. The Buccaneers currently have a score of 586 (+18) on the 6,805 yard, par-71 course.
 
Victor Billskoog (+4) shot a second round score of 76 and fell to T23rd in the field of 45. Wily Pumarol and Chris Carlin (+5) are both sitting T27 with scores of 147. Carlos Velez (+6) sits T35 with a score of 148 and Preston Roberts (+9) rounds out the Buccaneer squad T35 with a score of 151.
 
West Florida (-10) currently holds an 18 stroke advantage over the Buccaneers with a team score of 558. Sunshine State Conference foe Nova Southeastern (-4) jumped to second place with a second round score of 280. North Alabama (+7) sits at the third spot with a 575 team score and Florida Southern (+9) sits at fourth place, just nine strokes ahead of the Buccaneers.
 
Kyle Scott (-5) of West Florida and Jude Eustaquio of Florida Southern (-5) are tied for first place individually in the tournament with scores of 137.
 
The Buccaneers look to gain ground tomorrow in the final round of the NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional. Tee off is slated for 8am on Wednesday, May 7th.
 
 
First Round
AUSTIN, Texas – The Barry University men’s golf team finished the first day of the NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional tied for fifth out of eight teams on Monday at the Golf Club at Circle C. The Buccaneers shot an opening round of 294 (+10) on the 6,805 yard, par-71 course.
 
The Buccaneers are 15 strokes behind tournament leaders West Florida (-5)  and Florida Southern (-5) both of which shot five-under-par in the first round for a score of 279 to finish tied for first. Nova Southeastern (E) is currently third at even-par, while North Alabama (+5) carded a five-over-par score of 289 and is currently fourth. Barry (+10) is currently tied for fifth with Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn (+10) with scores of 294 to round out the top five teams.
 
Barry’s Victor Billskoog (-1) was the only Buccaneer to finish under par firing an opening round score of 70 and is currently 7th out of a field of 45 individuals. Chris Carlin (+3) finished T23, while Guillermo Pumarol (+4) and Carlos Velez (+4) finished the first round with identical scores of 75 to finished T28. Preston Roberts (+6) rounded out the Buccaneer five with a score of 77 and is currently 39th.
 
Florida Southern’s Jude Eustaquio (-7) is currently atop of the individual lead board after shooting a blazing seven-under 64 in the opening round. Eustaquio finished the first round with nine birdies and just two bogeys.
 
The second round of the regional tournament will begin with an 8 am tee off on Tuesday, May 6.
