MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell to the defending national champion Tampa Spartans 1-0 at Buccaneer Field in Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer action on Friday night.

The Spartans (7-3-0, 3-0-1 SSC) scored the game’s lone goal in the 48th minute. Brittany Spence played a ball up through the middle to Brittany Evans whose shot deflected off a Buccaneer defender and past keeper Sami Cromartie into the net.

In the 71st minute as the Buccaneers (6-5-1, 1-3-1 SSC) were trying for the equalizer, sophomore forward Emily Bourgoine challenged Spartan keeper Kendall Bourdan on a 50-50 ball in the 18-yard box  and came up just short. She was whistled for her second yellow card and sent off, leaving the Bucs a player down for the final 19:52.

Cromartie had eight saves for the Bucs, who controlled most the play in the first half. Bourdan had seven saves for Tampa.

The Bucs will face cross-town rival St. Thomas at Bobcat Field on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 4:00 pm.
