MIAMI, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers came in and knocked off NCAA Division I Florida International 54-40 on Wednesday night at FIU Arena. The Bucs held the Panthers to just 25.9 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.

“We had a very good defensive effort,” Barry head coach Bill Sullivan said. “We held them to just 19 points in the first half and 21 in the second, so we’re very happy with the way we played on that end.

The Bucs used a 14-7 run to start the second half to build an 18-point lead and then held off the Panthers down the stretch for the win.

The Bucs’ backcourt duo of Lucy Martinez and Princess Bailey combined for 30 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to pace the Bucs.

The Buccaneers jumped out an 11-4 lead behind seven points from Princess Bailey. But the Panthers surged back to go on top 14-11 with Fanni Hutlassa scoring five.

With the Panthers up 16-15, the Bucs put on a full-court press and rolled out a 15-3 run over the last 4:53 of the period to take a 30-19 advantage into the locker room.

The Bucs extended the half-time lead to 35-19, holding the Panthers scoreless for the first 4:35 of the period, and took their biggest lead at 11:47 on a layup by Christina Thompson.

The Panthers never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way and Alisha Sanford scored four points in the last minute to make the final margin.

Martinez paced the Bucs with 17 points and five steals, while Bailey added 13 points and seven rebounds. Mariesa Greene led everyone with 10 rebounds, while Sanford chipped in eight points and seven boards.

Marquita Adley led the Panthers with 12 points off the bench as no Panther starter reached double figures.

Sullivan’s Bucs avenged a 69-36 loss to the Panthers in 2006. It was their first ever exhibition win over a Division I opponent.

The Bucs conclude their exhibition season with a date against the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 3:00 pm in the BankUnited Center. They open the regular season Nov. 15-16 at Nova Southeastern’s Tip-off Classic, facing Clayton State and St. Augustine.
