Volleyball Slices Sailfish on Senior Night

MIAMI Shores, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team celebrated Senior Night on Friday, Nov. 7, beating the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (11-20) in straight sets.

Set one saw Barry (14-10, 5-9 SSC) storm out to an 11-5 lead off the strength of seven combined kills and two aces, one apiece by Camilla Pagnan and Lauren Evans. The Sailfish fought back to come within two points at 14-12. Barry took seven of the next 10 points to take a 21-15 lead before Palm Beach Atlantic again fought to bring the game within one point at 23-22. After a timeout the Bucs took two of the next three points off of a kill by Samara Ferreira and Pagnan to end the game 25-23.

Like set one, set two was back and forth. The Bucs and Sailfish were tied at 4-4 before Palm Beach took six of the eight points to take a 6-10 lead. The next tie came at 14-14 when Julie Ridley blasted the ball past two Sailfish blockers. Barry opened a small lead before the Sailfish bit back and tied it up 21-21. Neither team was able to get the two points needed to close out the match as the Bucs and Sailfish traded points back and forth through 27-27. Barry got the upper hand when Pagnan blasted a kill to go up 28-27, and Libby Walter finally ended it with a kill to take the set 29-27.

Set three was again close as the Bucs and Sailfish were tied through 5-5. Palm Beach was able to open a small lead to go up 6-9 before Barry earned four kills and a big block by Meisje-Sable Burton and Ridley to tie the score at 12-12. Palm Beach fought back to go up 13-16, forcing Barry to take a timeout. After the break, Barry earned four of the next seven points off of five combined kills by Pagnan, Ridley, and Stefanie Sveiven to tie it at 18-18. Barry finished out the set, 25-22, with the help of three Sailfish errors to take the match.

For the Buccaneers, Pagnan had 22 kills and Ridley added nine. Setter Libby Walter had 32 assists while Lauren Evans finished the match with 25 digs.

The Buccaneers return to action in the Health and Sports Center on Saturday, Nov. 8 against St. Thomas at 4 pm.
