LAKELAND, Fla.— The Barry University volleyball team lost in five sets to the Florida Southern Mocs on Friday evening.
In the first set, Barry got out to an early lead of 8-12 with the help of three Stefanie Sveiven kills. Florida Southern never got closer than three points as the Bucs (15-11, 5-10 SSC) continued their lead through 15-19 and 17-21. Barry got away with set one, winning 20-25. Camilla Pagnan and Sveiven ended the set with four kills apiece.
In set two, Florida Southern got out to a small lead of 5-2 lead before pushing it to 12-5 powered by the hitting of Danielle Higgnbotham. At 16-7, Barry earned three straight points off of two Buccaneer kills and a Florida Southern error to put the score at 16-11Barry fought back, tying the score at 22-22 before Florida Southern won three of the next four points to win the set 25-23.
The score was tied early in set three at 8-8 before Barry won six of the next nine points to go up 11-14. Barry maintained a three point lead through 15-18 and 18-21 as Pagnan, Danielle Bishop, Romina Powers, and Meisje-Sable Burton all earned points off of kills. Florida Southern got close at 21-23, but was unable to close out the set as Barry won the last two points to win the set 21-25.
Set four saw an early tie at 7-7 before Florida Southern got out to a lead of 14-10. Florida Southern maintained a three point lead through 18-15 and 20-17 before winning 25-22 forcing a fifth and decisive set.
In the short fifth set, Barry got out to an early 3-5 lead before Florida Southern won the next four points to take an 8-6 lead. Barry tied it at 9-9 with the help of two kills by Pagnan and one by Powers. The game was forced to 11-11 as both teams earned two more points. Florida Southern earned two of the next three points to go up 13-12. Pagnan earned a kill to tie it at 13-13, forcing Florida Southern to take a timeout. The Bucs and Mocs traded points back and forth through 15-15 before Barry took two of three points off of Florida Southern errors to go up 16-17. However, Florida Southern proved too much for the Bucs as they won the set19-17 to take the match.
For the Bucs, Pagnan had 23 kills while Libby Walter had 41 assists.
The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday, Nov, 15 at 2:00 pm at Saint Leo.
