BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Barry University men’s basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat Chestnut Hill, 60-55, Saturday night in the DoubleTree Guest Suites Holiday Classic at the de Hoernle Center.
Barry (5-4) led most of the first half, as the Griffins’ largest lead of three at the 6:50 mark was quickly matched by a Karega Tucker 3-pointer 40 seconds later.
Chad Bishop and Willie Whitfield combined to finish the first half in style, as Bishop hit a corner three, one of three in the first half, then Whitfield finished the scoring for the Bucs with a dunk.
The Bucs began to pull away at the 13:38 mark of the second half following a layup by Tucker. Tucker led all scorers with 18 points, as he went 6-for-11 from the floor.
Tucker continued to add to his strong night, as his three-pointer midway through the second half helped expand the lead to 10, before Whitfield muscled inside for another quick two for the largest lead of the night at 12.
Chestnut Hill would get as close as three with 30 seconds remaining, but a pair of Whitfield free throws helped put the game away.
Whitfield had another strong game, as he tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. Bishop found his stroke from beyond the arc, as he finished with 17 points, going 5-for-9 from downtown.
Barry will play another game in the Holiday Classic Sunday against Valdosta State beginning at 3:30 p.m.
