Men's Basketball drops Conference Opener to Saint Leo

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 72-71, to the Saint Leo Lions on Wednesday afternoon in the Health and Sports Center.

Five minutes in, the Lions (7-6, 1-0 SSC) were up 17-8 before the Bucs (5-6, 0-1 SSC) went on a 13-0 to take a 17-21 lead. Zach Trapp hit two from the field including a three-pointer to tie it at 17-17.

The game remained close through the remainder of the first half as the Bucs went in to halftime up 32-34.
The Lions opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 41-34 lead. The Bucs stayed in it, led by an array of field goals from Trapp, Karega Tucker, and Chad Bishop.

Going into the final minute of the game, the Lions led 62-60. With 0:35 left, Tucker hit a 22-footer to tie the game. Seconds later, a Trapp steal and Bishop recovery sent the game into overtime.

In overtime the Bucs stayed close, taking a 68-69 lead off of a coast-to-coast layup by Tucker. The Bucs forced a turnover, and held the ball until only 14 seconds remained. Trapp hit one foul shot before Saint Leo’s Josue Vasquez hit a layup to put the Lions within one at 70-71.

A missed Barry free throw gave the Lions one more opportunity to score. On an inbound play with 0:03 seconds left, Jordan Prais hit a 12-footer from the baseline to give the Lions the 72-71 victory.

Tucker was the lead scorer in the game, racking up 23 points off of 10-19 from the field. Trapp added 12 while Bishop and Willie Whitfield combined for 17.

The Buccaneers return to action on the road on Saturday, January 3 at 4 pm against Eckerd.
