DAVIE, Fla. – After starting out strong, the Barry University women’s basketball team faltered on the road against Nova Southeastern, dropping their first Sunshine State Conference game of the season, 62-56, Wednesday night .

It looked to be Barry’s night, as the Bucs jumped out to a nine-point lead before seven minutes had gone by after Mariesa Greene hit a free throw to cap a three-point-play.

The Bucs (12-3, 3-1 SSC) would continue to hold the lead until the 7:17 mark on a jumper by Abbie Tepe helped push the Sharks (5-9, 1-3 SSC) ahead by two.

After trailing by four points a couple of times, Barry closed the half strong thanks to a three-pointer by Princess Bailey which tied the score at the half.

The game remained close in the second half, as after the teams tied for the eighth time, another Tepe jumper at the 6:00 mark would give the Sharks the lead for good.

A pair of Kristy Singletary free throws helped bring Barry to within one-point with less than a minute to play.

NSU countered with a free throw by Teppe, but after she missed the second free throw, the Sharks recorded a team offensive rebound and subsequently hit both free throws after that to secure the victory.

Bailey and Greene led the way for the Bucs, as they each tallied 16 points. Lucy Martinez also scored in double-digits, adding 12 points.

Stephanie Sarosi and Teppe powered the Sharks bite, as the two combined for 36 points, with Sarosi scoring 20.

Barry will remain on the road as they will play at Tampa this Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
