TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers battled down to the wire, but fell short against the Tampa Spartans 70-61 in the Martinez Center in Sunshine State Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday.

The Spartans (9-5, 2-3 SSC) led 51-40 with 7:30 left to play after a pair of free throws by Anthony Labruno. But Erick Nsangou and Jamaal Madyun keyed a 16-9 run for the Bucs (6-9, 1-4 SSC) over the next five minutes that trimmed the lead to four, 60-56, on a Zach Trapp three-pointer with 2:02 remaining.

But the Spartans hit six of seven free throws over the last 1:12 and the Bucs misfired on their last three shots from the field.

Madyun came off the bench with 15 points to lead the Bucs, while Karega Tucker chipped in 14. Fred Woods had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Tampa before fouling out with 0:58 seconds left. Rashaad Calloway added 15 points and Jonathan Ball 13 for the Spartans.

The Bucs return home on Wednesday, Jan. 21 to take on the Lynn Fighting Knights in the Health & Sports Center at 7:30 pm.
