MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Angie Werschel knocked off sixth-ranked Eleonora Iannozzi of Lynn, but the fourth-ranked Fighting Knights were too much for the Barry Buccaneers, winning 8-1 in Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis action on Monday.
Werschel, unranked in the latest ITA national poll, bested Iannozzi 6-4, 7-5 at number one singles. It was Werschel’s first regular season win over a ranked opponent.
The Knights captured the other eight flights, including all three doubles. Thirteenth-ranked Katerina Jiskrova and Magdalena Ekert defeated Werschel and Laime Contreras 8-2 at number one. Seventh-ranked Jessica Yanoff and Iannozzi beat Yulia Kashelkina and Caroline Wendling 8-3 at number two, while Tessie Salame and Alisson Siaci shutout Mei-Jing Ang and Julie Cadet 8-0 at number three.
In singles, the Knights won the bottom four flights in straight sets. At number two, Wendling split sets with Jiskrova dropping the first 6-2, but rebounding to win 7-5 in the second. With the team match decided, they played a super tie-breaker for the point, with Jiskrova coming out on top 10-2.
The Bucs travel for three matches this weekend, facing Tampa in Tampa on Friday, Florida Southern on Saturday in Lakeland, Fla., and Florida Tech on Sunday in Melbourne, Fla.
