MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry Buccaneers swept a Thursday afternoon doubleheader from St. Thomas at Bobcat Softball Field, winning game one 5-2 and game two 6-1 in five innings due to darkness.
In game one, Barry struck in the second inning as Amber Durkin hit a sacrifice fly after a Sara Hipson leadoff triple. Shyla Rider added an RBI double in the inning to tie Maile Keeney for the Buccaneer career doubles record with 46.
Natalie Heeley added an RBI double in the fourth and the Bucs (9-4) also scored twice on Bobcat errors.
Amber Jack (5-3) earned the win for Barry with 6.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out five. Amanda Heyl (0-3) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing all five runs on 10 hits and two walks. She struck out two.
In the second game, Brianna Smith (4-1) flirted with a second straight no-hitter, before settling for the one-hitter. She worked five innings, allowing just one unearned run. She walked two and struck out two.
Smith, Durkin and Ashley Likens each had two hits for the Bucs, while Durkins, Smith and Rider each knocked in a run.
Gina Guffanti (0-1) took the loss for St. Thomas (2-4). She allowed six runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks and struck out one.
The Bucs travel to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, Feb. 28, before embarking on an eight-day trip to Georgia over spring break.
