MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—The Barry University women’s rowing team showed good spirit in their first dual race of the season, however came up short against Philadelphia on Saturday morning. 
 
In the varsity 8 event, Barry crossed the line in a time of 7:18.73; about six seconds shy of Philadelphia’s time of 7:12.78. The varsity 8 squad consisted of Cox- Priscilla Donahue, Stroke- Vanessa Viaderro, 7- Robin Cascioli, 6- Elise Carlson, 5- Renee Forcier, 4- Katie Rogers, 3- Summerlin Knipe, 2- Kelsey Garcia, Bow- Rhiannon Doka.
 
“The squad was a little nervous about some possible bad racing conditions” head coach Dave Sanderson said.  “Philadelphia had a strong race and showed their experience in the second thousand meters. But we did a good job of trying to stay in the race.”
 
In the 4+ event, the varsity 4 from Philadelphia took first place with a time of 8:27.01. Philadelphia’s novice 4 took second in 8:59.21, while Barry’s novice 4 (Cox- Jen Cortina, Stroke –Courtney Greene, 3- Kelsey Garcia, 2- Janice Avila, Bow- Jedidah Morrell) captures third with a time of 9:13.14.
 
“This was their first race as a group” Sanderson said.  “It’s a good starting point for this young group, and they will only improve.”
 
The Bucs return to action on March 27 and 28 in the Canal 54 Duels in Fellsmere, Fla.
