Softball Splits Doubleheader With Lions

ST LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader with the Saint Leo Lions on get-away day, taking game one 5-0, but dropping the nightcap 6-5.

In the first game, Amber Jack (15-6) tossed her sixth straight shutout, running her scoreless streak to 50.1 innings. She gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four.

For the second straight game, Natalie Heeley broke the scoring ice, plating Ashley Likens in the fifth inning with an RBI single.

The Bucs (22-10, 7-2 SSC) broke the game open in the seventh. Likens scored again, this time when Cassy Zamora was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sara Hipson followed with a two-run double to left and Brittany Anderson drove in Hipson with a base hit.

Ashley Urbanik (15-12) took the loss for the Lions. She allowed all five runs (four earned) on eight hits and six walks, while striking out four.

In the nightcap, the Bucs appeared on the verge of a sweep. They scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to lead 5-0 going into the final frame. Anderson had a two-run double in the fourth, while Likens and Amanda Goelz delivered RBI singles in the sixth.

But in the seventh inning, the Lions (25-14, 5-4 SSC) finally got to Jack, who had come on in relief of Brianna Smith in the fifth inning. They plated three runs, then Urbanik finally got revenge belting a walk-off three-run homer over the center field wall.

Jack took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. She walked one and struck out two. Prior to the loss, she extended her scoreless streak to 52.2 innings, breaking the school mark of 52 set by Geralyn Elam in 2003.

Kristen Kelly (9-2) got the win for the Lions. She tossed a complete game, scattering 13 hits and walking two without striking out a batter. Three of her five runs were earned.

The Bucs return to action on Friday-Saturday, Apr. 3-4, at home as they host the Florida Southern Lady Mocs.
