MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University baseball team made it a clean sweep of Saint Leo Saturday, as the Bucs took the first game, 11-1, and then rolled in the nightcap, 7-1, in Sunshine State Conference action.
The Bucs (31-4, 11-1 SSC) started strong in game one, as a Yan Gomes double down the right field line plated Danny Lima for the first run of the game.
With Barry ahead just 5-1 entering the eighth, a six-run frame helped put the game out of reach.
Nick Shaw delivered the first blow in the inning with a two-run double down the right field line. Yas Gutierrez, Drew Dwelly and Joel Keefe all added RBIs to the inning to put the game away.
Charlie Short (9-0) had another solid start on the mound, as the junior right-hander pitched seven innings, allowing just one unearned run, while striking out eight.
In game two, the Lions (13-27, 4-11 SSC) opened the scoring in the second inning, but the lead didn’t last long.
The Bucs tallied runs over the next four innings, with Yudelmis Hernandez and Lima delivering clutch two-run RBI hits to help Barry score seven runs over that four inning span.
Freshman right-hander Brad McAllister (6-0) went the distance, allowing just one earned run, while allowing no walks and striking out four.
The sweep keeps Barry in a tie with Florida Southern for first in the SSC, as the two will face off in a big three game set beginning Thursday, but before that series begins, the Bucs will play at Florida Tech on Tuesday beginning at 8 p.m.
