Women's Tennis Finishes Third at SSC Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla.—The #13 ranked Barry University women’s tennis team finished third at the SSC Tennis Championship on Saturday morning, beating #18 Florida Southern 5-1.

 

In doubles competition, the Bucs took two of three points to get out to an early lead. The #16 ranked team of Angie Werschel and Yulia Kashelkina beat Senka Softic and Ashley Hungerford 8-2 in the number one spot. The Mocs’ Erin Conroy and Veronika Kovacikova took number two doubles, beating Mei-Jing Ang and Lamie Contreras 8-3. The Bucs took the third spot though as Caroline Wendling and Berit Peterson defeated Amanda Carns and Nora Baertschi 8-4.

 

In singles competition, the Bucs earned three wins to propel them to victory. In number two singles, Wendling beat Hungerford 6-0, 6-2. In the third spot, Kashelkina defeated Conroy 6-2, 6-4. Julie Cadet wrapped it up for the Bucs, taking the sixth spot over Carnes 6-0, 6-3.

 

With a third place finish, the Bucs failed to automatically qualify for the NCAA South Regional on Thursday, May 7.  The Bucs will now wait to see if they receive  an at large bid.
