MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University baseball team split a doubleheader with Tampa, winning the first game 6-3, before dropping the second game, 7-1 Saturday afternoon at Feinbloom Field in Sunshine State Conference action.

Barry (40-7, 17-4 SSC) answered Tampa’s run in the top of the first inning in game one with three in the bottom of the frame.

Nick Shaw doubled to begin the inning, then after Yan Gomes doubled and Yas Gutierrez walked, the table was set for Yudelmis Hernandez.
Hernandez didn’t wait long before ripping a shot into the right-center gap clearing the bases and putting the Bucs on top.

Hernandez continued to add to his day, plating another run in the fourth on an RBI single.

The run support was enough for Charley Short (11-1) to record the victory, as he lasted six innings, giving up three earned runs, while striking out three. His eleventh win of the season also tied him for the school mark for wins in a season with Oscar Farach, as he went 11-2 back in 2001.

Game two was a different story, as Tampa starter Alex Koronis didn’t allow a base runner until the fifth when Gutierrez led off the inning with a walk, then Hernandez followed with a single, which was the first hit of the game for Barry.

The Spartans (37-14, 14-7 SSC) rolled up six runs in the third to put the game out of reach.
Jose Jiminez doubled home a pair to get Tampa started, which was later followed by a three-run shot by Steven Broschofsky.

The Bucs took two of three in the series with Tampa and remain alone in first place in the SSC.

Gomes also broke the school record for total bases in a season, as his total is now at 147, breaking John Servidio's mark of 141 last year.

Barry will be back in action this Tuesday when they play at Palm Beach Atlantic beginning at 6 p.m.
