Volleyball Blackens Reddies To Open The Season

DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the 2009 volleyball season with a 3-1 win (25-11, 12-25, 25-18, 25-22) over the Henderson State Lady Reddies at the NSU Shark Invitational at the Taft Center on Friday.
 
The Bucs grabbed hold of the first set in the second rotation as Ady Alcantara served nine straight points to put them up 9-1. The Bucs shut down the Reddies’ service game with an 81 sideout percentage.

Henderson State came back to even the match in set two. HSU libero Bethany Wright served six straight points to erase a 16-15 Barry lead and the Reddie held on for the equalizer.
 
In the third set, coach Frederico Santos went the to bench for Julie Priester and Lovisa Johansson and the pair sparked the Bucs over the final two sets.
 
“I think Julie Priester and Lovisa Johansson came great out of the bench and gave us a spark,” Santos said. “From then on it was just a question of believing we could close out the match.”
 
Alcantara led the Bucs with 17 kills, while Julia Teixiera added 13 and Julia Ridley had 12. Spenser Rigg had 23  digs, while Alcantara and Ridley closed out double-doubles with 16 and 12 digs respectively. Setter Libby Walter directed the offense to a .319 attack percentage with 37 assists.
 
The Bucs take on Winona State later tonight at 7:00 pm and close out the tournament on Saturday against Michigan Tech (12:30 pm) and Oakland City (5:30 pm).

Buccaneers Rally Past Warriors
 
DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rallied past the Winona State Warriors 3-0 (25-17,28-26,25-19) at the NSU Shark Invitational on Saturday night.

The Bucs trailed late in the first two sets but rallied to win and carried the momentum through the third set.

In set one, the Bucs trailed 16-15, but scored 10 of the last 11 points. Samara Ferreira served the last six points of the set to secure the win.

In the second set, they trailed 21-19, rallied for a 23-21 lead, then had to go into extra points for the victory. Ferreira again served out for the set.

Set three was a more stable affair. The Bucs jumped out to a 10-5 lead and cruised to the win.

Julia Teixeira led the team with 14 kills and Ady Alcantara added 11. Libby Walter had a double-double with 29 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
