GREENWOOD, S.C—It was a tale of two halves at Legioner Field on Friday as the Barry Buccaneers men’s soccer team led 1-0 at the half but thanks to a three goal second half by sophomore Mark Anderson beat Lander 6-2.

Anderson amassed a total of eight points, tying a school mark for the second-most points in a game, and setting a career best for goals in a single game with four.

“It was a solid performance straight away,” Barry head coach Steve McCrath said. “I’m very excited about what the team did today. I’m pleased; I’m pleased with the overall result.”

The scoring started for the Bucs during the 6th minute when junior Sascha Koettig fed Anderson for a short range chip shot over the diving Lander goalkeeper. Koettig controlled the ball into the box, pulling the goalie out, and then placed the ball to Anderson for the finish from six yards out.

The flood gates opened for the Barry offense in the second half when Anderson again chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to make the score 2-0. The assist came from junior transfer Sean Trinidad on a beautifully placed long pass from the halfway line.

Goal number three for the Bucs came off the foot of Koettig. Koettig took the ball from 30 yards out, danced around several Bearcat defenders and rifled a shot to the back of the net from seven yards out.

The next Barry goal was headed in by Anderson solidifying his hat trick. Anderson’s header was assisted by senior Bacheler Jean Pierre from just inside the goalie box.

The Bucs scoring continued when freshman Gerado Sabat flicked a pass to one of the three senior on the team, Juan Mantilla, who fired a shot between the pipes giving Barry a 5-1 advantage with 8:00 minutes left to play.

The sixth and final Barry goal was, again, shot through the goal by Anderson. Anderson took a pass from Bacheler Jean Pierre just past midfield and muscled his way through two defenders eventually scoring from 20 yards out during the 86th minute. The four-goal game gives Anderson five goals on the season.

“Mark [Anderson] is a special kid; he’s just a special player,” McCrath said. “He really scored some great goals. I was also very excited about how intentional he was in tirying to get the other players involved.”

The Barry defense rose to the occasion and answered the call allowing only five shots on goal. Buccaneer goaltender Johnny Rodrigues thwarted three Bearcats attempts on goal but did allow two goals.

The first Lander goal came off of a rebound during the 80th minute, and the second one came off a penalty kick at the 87:42 minute mark.

The Bucs look for revenge on Sunday against Flagler in Anderson, SC. Last season Barry lost to Flagler 2-1 at Flagler, but Sunday the Bucs look to turn the tables at a neutral location. The game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
