MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Captain and the playmaker’s one two punch proved too much for the Nova Southeastern Sharks as junior Sascha Koettig and sophomore Mark Anderson both had a goal in Barry’s 3-1 win on Tuesday.

Team captain Koettig scored first at the 9:46 minute mark. The Bucs threw in from 20 yards to Randy Taylor then Taylor passed to Kendall Sealy at the top of the goalie box who then fed Koettig for the first strike of the match. Koettig’s goal came from nine yards out, just outside the corner of the 6-yard box. The goal was poked through the pipes at the lower 90.

The second Buccaneer goal was scorched through the net by the sophomore playmaker Mark Anderson. The goal gives Anderson a team leading eight on the year and an average of one goal per game. Anderson’s score came during the 30th minute from an Andres Perez pass. Perez served to Anderson from across the field and Anderson blasted it home from 18 yards out right in the middle of the box.

Shortly after the Anderson goal that gave the Bucs a 2-0, Barry substituted into the game sophomore Alvaro Yusty. Yusty joined the Bucs last week and has only been working out with the team for two weeks. Yusty quickly made his presence known after his shot from 15 yards out found the back of the net. Yusty’s goal came a mere 00:27 seconds after he entered the game at the 30:26 mark. This was the first action he has seen all year. On the assist to Yusty was again Taylor. The two assists for Taylor gives him a tie for first on the team with three.

“This is what I have trained for all week,” Yusty said. “Unfortunately I haven’t been able to help the team out lately in the games so I felt like I needed to come and just do my part and play the system, and that’s [a goal] what happens.”

The half ended shortly after the Bucs’ third goal giving Barry a 3-0 half time lead. Barry posted eight shots during the first half and Buccaneer goalkeeper, freshman, Johnny Rodrigues only had to make one save.

From the minute the second half started the Nova Sharks played with a reckless abandon. The intensity levels on both sides of the field leaped as did the emotions from both team. The Sharks managed to break Rodrigues’ shutout during the 85th minute off a free kick from Craig Heenighan. Heenighan took the kick from exactly on top of the box near the left corner and squeaked a shot past Rodrigues.

“We started out really well,” Barry head coach Steve McCrath said. “Tonight we were really strong in the first half, I think we had great control, and we were willing to take everything. In the second half they changed their tactics a little bit, we were prepared for that, but that’s part of the problem right now is just making the adjustment. So I’m not super happy with the second half, but I’m happy we got the win.”

Tonight’s game gave a glimpse of what the Bucs have to look forward to in conference play as a combined 50 fouls were committed and a total of eight cards were issued.

The biggest Barry threat during the second half came from Anderson on a 3-on-2 break away. Anderson led the break and passed to Koettig on the left side of the box and Koettig’s shot caromed off the diving Nova Southeastern goalkeeper right to the awaiting foot of Anderson. Anderson’s shot at a wide open net was blocked by the sliding Nova goalkeeper who made a great recovery on the play.

Conference play continues this weekend for Barry as the Bucs travel to Tampa to play the Spartans at 7 p.m. on Saturday. You can listen to the game live brought to you by the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network. Pregame starts at 6:45 p.m.
