TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry men’s soccer team’s gutsy effort against the number five ranked Tampa Spartans came up short in a 2-1 loss on Saturday.
The Barry solo goal came from junior Andres Perez and was assisted by junior Sascha Koettig. Koettig fed Perez just inside the box at the corner and Perez’s shot nicked the top cross bar and bounced down and through. The goal gives Perez two on the season and the assist gives Koettig a team leading four.
Buccaneer sophomore Mark Anderson had six shots, two of which struck the top cross bar. Anderson’s six shots was almost half the total amount of Buccaneer shots. Barry had a total of 13 shots and six shots on goal.
The Perez goal came late in the second half at the 85:24 mark. With only five minutes to play the Bucs gave it their all and almost tied the game with 00:05 to play. With 00:11 seconds left to play Barry was awarded a free kick from 60 yards out. Anderson took the kick and lobbed the ball to the top of the box where sophomore Alvaro Yusty headed it to freshman Gerado Sabat just outside the center of the box. Sabat chest-passed the ball to Perez and Perez blasted a low shot from 21 yards out toward the goal but was deflected out of bounds.
Tampa’s goals came during the 44th minute from Brian Fekete and then during the 64th minute from Pascal Milien.
Tampa outshot the Bucs 24 to 13. Barry freshman goalkeeper Johnny Rodrigues had seven saves, four in the first half and three in the second half.
The Buccaneers’ next action is Wednesday, Sept. 30 against Palm Beach Atlantic at 4:00 p.m.
