Men's Tennis Continue to Advance At ITA Regional

LAKELAND, Fla.-- The Barry University men's Tennis Team continued their play at the ITA Regional on Saturday afternoon with mixed results.

Ales Svigelj won his first match on Saturday. Svigelj took down West Florida's Andrey Pozhidev 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the round of eight, then fell to Lynn's Al Sarra 6-2, 7-6 in the afternoon.

Max Wimmer played Valdosta State's Danel Dueren in the quarterfinal, falling 6-2, 7-5.

Marco Mokrzycki beat  Kevin Ducros of West Florida 7-6, 6-2 to advance to the Final against Dueren. Dueren went on to win that match 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles competition, Morkrzycki and Svigelj fell to Pavanelli and Voirin of Lynn, 8-4. Friatzl and Wimmer lost their doubles match as well, losing 8-4 to Lynn's Racak and Sarra.

LAKELAND, Fla.—Day two action continues at the Wilson/ITA Regional Tournament with three Buccaneers advancing to the final eight in singles play and two Barry doubles teams advance to the final eight as well.

All singles played two matches, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Barry sophomore Max Wimmer first faced West Alabama’s James Gardner and won 6-2, 6-2. Wimmer then defeated the number eight seed Roman Schirmaier from Florida Southern 6-3, 7-6. Tomorrow Wimmer is matched against the top seeded player Daniel Dueren from Valdosta State.

Also advancing to the final eight is Bucs freshman Marco Mokrzycki. Morkrzycki first faced teammate David Barragan and defeated him 6-1, 6-2. After reaching the final 16 Morkrzycki defeated Neil Clausen from Rollins 7-6, 6-2. Morkrzycki faces number four seeded Kevin Ducros from West Florida tomorrow.

The third and final Barry player to advance to the round of eight is senior Ales Svegelj. Svegelj first defeated Nick Rowlands from Rollins after Rowlands retired from the match. West Florida’s Andrey Pozhidaev was Svegelj next victim, suffering a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 loss to the Barry senior. Svegelj plays conference foe Al Sarra from Lynn tomorrow.

Advancing to the doubles round of eight for the Bucs is freshman/senior combo Mokrzycki/Svigelj. Mokrzycki/Svigelj defeated Palm Beach Atlantic’s Atanasov/Bolanos team 8-4. Also to the next round tomorrow is the Barry team of Emanuel Fraitzel/Wimmer. Fraitzel/Wimmer defeated Lenhart/Sickman from Valdosta State.

Tomorrow concludes the tournament as play continues at 8:30 a.m.

Men's Tennis Off On The Right Foot At ITA Regional

LAKELAND, Fla.—Eight of nine singles players and three of four doubles teams advance for the Barry men’s tennis team on the first day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships.

“It’s always a good feeling to have the success like we did today,” Barry men’s tennis head coach George Samuel said. “I think everybody played fairly well and I think one of the reasons is that we played in the previous tournament last weekend. The tournament last week really got us warmed up for this. “

All nine Buccaneers received a bye in the first round of 128. Number-nine seeded Max Wimmer advanced after overtaking Michael Kuech from Valdosta State 4-6, 6-1, 10-2. Simon Raagaard beat Florida Southern’s Guenther Fercher 6-4, 7-5. Barry freshman Marco Mokrzycki earned the number-six seed and defeated Florida Southern’s Christian Lange 6-3, 6-2. Senior David Barragan beat Erik Thunberg from Eckerd 6-1, 6-4.

Emanuel Fraitzel was seeded seventh and took care of George Laffey from Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Sergio Velez defeated Drew Hollis from Florida Tech 6-0, 6-1. Barry senior Jakub Fejfar defeated Alex McDonald from Eckerd 6-1, 6-0. Number two seeded Ales Svegelj beat Javier Castro from Florida Southern 6-2, 7-5. The lone singles loss for the Bucs came from freshman Ruben Penate. Penate was defeated by Otto Lenhart from Valdosta State 6-4, 6-2.

Barry doubles teams also enjoyed a great deal of success in day one action. The ninth-seeded duo of Fejfar/Velez beat Florida Southern’s Lange/Taylor team 9-7. The Fraitzel/Wimmer team defeated West Florida’s Leighty/Schujmann 8-5. The number-two seed and freshman/senior combo Mokrzycki/Svigelj beat Eckerd’s Sato/Thunberg 8-5. The Buccaneers Barragan/Raagaard team was the only doubles defeat on the day with an 8-2 loss to West Alabama’s Gardner/Delgado.

“I would really like to see one of our guys win a singles and a doubles final here at the ITA Regional’s this weekend,” Samuel said.

The action continues tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m.
